Reception for the artist and dance party featuring the music of DJ LENGUA: October 19, 8-11pm
Queens Nails Annex is pleased to present the project BULK orchestrated by San Francisco based artist TONY LABAT. For six weeks, the gallery "facility" will be transformed into a large-scale site-specific social structure where community involvement, dialogue and discourse will be exchanged. The monumentality of this project is through the architectural manifestations and the emergence of structural logistics within the facility walls. These walls will transform into a social club where Labat and members will have the opportunity to exchange passages and social dialogues with each other. As time progresses during BULK, dichotomies such as historic lineage and importance will form. This collaboration is a pinnacle project within Queen's Nails Annex.
Since the late seventies through the present, Tony Labat has been pushing the boundaries of contemporary performance art, sculpture and video by creating identifications within these genres of visual art. Labat received his BFA in 1978 and MFA in 1980 from the San Francisco Art Institute. Labat has worked as a performance and installation artist, sculptor and with video media and has exhibited nationally and internationally at MOCA-Los Angeles, MOMA-New York, SFMOMA-San Francisco, among many galleries and institutions. He has received numerous awards for his work including several grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. Since 1985, he has been resident faculty of the New Genres Department of the San Francisco Art Institute, where is currently Chair.
