Artist Statement
The Archis an ancient device used to span space and form transition. The shape
implies movement and change. My work often employs the arch as a motif. Recently, I
decided to move beyond representing this symbolic form. I planned to build a structure
that would be wide enough to attract people to pass through it. Also I became aware
that I must install it in the center court of Carondelet. At first, I was not entirely
clear as to why it had to be at school beyond the concept that these students will
need it to be there.
Many students are consumed with a tremendously restricted view of their future.
Proscribing to an institutionally defined myth of success, they often value temporary
achievement and recognition over acquiring knowledge and understanding. Lives are
planned and regulated by to-do lists that they do not write – or fully comprehend.
The students need powerful cues to value their unique person, their personal powers,
and their imaginations.
